Visualizing Poetry with Mixed Media

In an effort to create a multidisciplinary mixed media art project, Elizabeth designed a project where students chose a poem from an online database, summarized and interpreted it, and developed mixed media projects visualizing the meaning, emotion, and themes of the poem they chose. Students practiced analyzing poems given to them before choosing their own. The base of their project was scrap cardboard.

Students had to incorporate 3-4 mixed media elements including tempera paint, collage material (magazine, newspaper, comics), fabric samples, and Micron pen. Students needed to add a line or stanza of their poem to their project and visually represent it throughout their project. Students developed artist statements and completed sketch and final artwork critiques.
