Oil Pastel Animal Portrait

After her Studio Art class had practiced oil pastel blending and drawing techniques, Elizabeth designed a summative project that combines concept development and oil pastel skills. Students had done several portraits of people in the class before but never animals. They were asked to create an oil pastel portrait of an animal of their choice with elements of personification and whimsy while also incorporating multiple of the blending techniques they had mastered previously. Students found reference photos of their chosen animal, pose, clothing item, background, etc before developing a project outline and sketch. The class demonstrated great expertise in the medium and concept development skills with this project.
